Learning Beyond the Class rooms

The Context

Beyond the Classroom activities are essential for the overall development of Quantum students. They provide opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills. These activities also help students find a healthy balance between academics and personal life, preventing burnout. By engaging in such activities, students gain exposure to real-world scenarios, professional settings, and industry practices, contributing to their personal and professional growth.

Objectives of the Practice

Quantum University inputs essential skills and values that students can develop through Beyond the Classroom Learning which are:

  1. Logical and Analytical Thinking– Analyzing reasons behind events & situations.
  2. Critical thinking– Examining concepts, ideas as well as problems & issues.
  3. Creative thinking– Innovative ways to solve problems, visualization.
  4. Problem-solving skills– Solving problems utilizing various concepts, solutions, etc.
  5. Leadership skills– Taking initiatives and responsibilities; influencing others in working for a goodpurpose; setting goals; motivating others towards goals; taking accountability.
  6. Social skills– Collaboration; teamwork; building good relationships.
  7. Emotional skills– Understanding your strengths and weaknesses; controlling emotions & empathy for others.
  8. Communication skill– Power of expression, good listener, public speaking etc.
  9. Technology skills– Using various computer software/apps to get things done.
  10. Social values– Respecting differences - values and culture among individuals.
  11. Ethical values– Maintaining ethics, good moral values in public life.
  12. Recreational values– Participating in & Understanding Importance of leisure and recreation .
The Practice

To enhance learning beyond the classroom, and to encourage and nudge students to take part in them, three practices have been initiated.

  1. Audit Credit Courses by the name of Passion Programs (PROPs)
  2. General Proficiency credits have been linked to participation / Outcome and achievements in extracurricularand co-curricular activities with a proper systematic assessment model.
A) PASSION PROGRAMS (PROPS)

PURPOSE

The purpose of Passion Programs is to provide a platform to students to explore, nurture and hone their talents beyond academics.

EVALUATION SYSTEM

Performance of students will be evaluated on basis of the following parameters:

GRADING

Format – (% attendance and participation in weekly events)

  1. Duration - 1 full year (two consecutive semesters).
  2. Each PROP, upon successful completion as per the ‘Evaluation System’, carries (4) credit points.
  3. Each UG student needs to register at least in one PROP course in the first or second semester. However,he/she may change the PROP within eight weeks of the first semester. In such a case his/her starting point will be the beginning of the second semester.
  4. PROPS are Audit Programs only where the credits are not counted for calculating the CGPA of the student.
  5. It is mandatory for every student to earn 4 credit points in the UG program. In other words, a student needs toopt for one such program during the tenure of his/her academic program. However, he/she may continueparticipating in any club/society willfully after completion of the PROP opted for as above.
  6. A student may register in up to two PROPS if he/she so wishes. However, he/she will be audited in one PROP only as opted and defined by the student himself/herself at the time of registration.
    1. Office bearer of his/her respective PROP.
    2. Attendance in weekly activities
    3. Participation in weekly activities
    4. Participation in the annual major showcase events
    5. Participation in External Competitive Activities at Inter-university, District, State, National andInternational levels
    1. Unsatisfactory – Below 360 marks (< 75% + 5 weekly events)
    2. Satisfactory – 360- 520 marks (= 75% + 10 wkly+ showcase)
    3. Good – 521- 680 (= 90% +15 wkly+showcase+Inter level)
    4. Very Good–681-798 (= 90% +15 wkly+showcase+Runner-up at State/Inter level)
    5. Excellent – 799- 899 Marks (= 90% +15 wkly+showcase+Winner at State/District/National level + Office Bearer)
    6. Extra Ordinary - Above 900 points
B) General Proficiency Framework

At Quantum University students earn one General Proficiency credit each semester (excluding the final semester) through an audit course by participating in predefined co-curricular activities. These activities are selected to promote holistic development, with a clear list and grading criteria published to help students set specific goals. The assessment is based on participation level, event quality, and leadership in organizing these activities. The specific categories and subcategories are outlined below.

Holistic Development Index:To gauge the holistic development of our students, a Holistic Development Index (HDI) was calculated, taking into account both academic and extracurricular achievements. The HDI is a composite score that reflects the well- rounded growth of individuals. The formula for HDI is as follows:
